May Armorials Update

Thirty new armorials have been added, bringing the total up to 545.

Highlights start with Wriothesley heraldic collections, volume II, c. 1530 English (London, British Library, Add MS 45132). Many examples of standards, plus a bunch of shields at the end.

From c. 1460 Germany, we have Donaueschinger Wappenbuch (Badische Landesbibliothek, Cod. Donaueschingen 496). The manuscript is heavily damaged, but the artwork is very nice; everything is drawn in a simple, sketch-like style, but with a lot of precision and care.

There’s also Wappenbuch, 16th C Czech (Knihovna Národního muzea v Praze, Ms a 20), which is over 1000 pages, and appears to be at least 4 separate armorials bound together.

There’s also a Wappenbuch from c. 1567 Germany (Klagenfurt, Kärntner Landesarchiv, Geschichtsverein, Cod. 5/29), which has some lovely artwork (but is unfortunately rather exuberantly watermarked by the digitizing museum).

And in the ‘Treatises’ category, there’s Manieres d’armóiries, 16th C Spanish (Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional de España, MSS 1467), which is weird even by treatise standards, but also has some beautiful artwork.
